  1. -Fantasy World Maps Blog

Welcome to my website! I created this, a few years ago, as a place to display my hobby of hand-drawing fantasy maps to the world. It has been well overdue a make-over so here it is.

I started drawing maps when I was just a kid and had read Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and David Eddings' Belgariad. I found the maps even more interesting than the plot of the books and caught myself constantly turning back to see just where the characters were and what interesting places were around them during their adventures.

I thought that I would like to become a science fiction or fantasy author at first, but I never got any further than drawing the map! The problem was that the map was never good enough, so I always went back and re-drew the entire thing while rarely actually thinking about who inhabited the world I had created. That's how it carried on, many of the names and ideas have hung around and migrated from one world to another, but the story never gets told...

This website gives me the opportunity to write down some detail about my worlds and why they are drawn in the way that they are, without writing short stories or a novel. Maybe I will try that one day, but I don't imagine that it would be easy. All my maps are hand drawn, the only computer manipulation is scanning in and converting some maps without colour to grey scale. Although I have manipulated the Eyeis map on the Other Lands page slightly , because it was a commission. There are plenty of digitally drawn maps out there and lots of websites and programs to help create them. Certainly some produce excellent results, but  I can’t help but think that most of these maps don't look quite as real. Maybe one day I'll have a go at doing a map this way, but I don't think it would be as satisfying. There is something about sitting down with a piece of paper and a pencil that I don't think a computer can reproduce.

I was never sure how many people would be interested in this site, I started doing this for my own benefit. However I have had some great feedback and very kind comments, both in the guest book and by email. Please have a look through the site and let me know what you think. Feel free to pass on any comments, good or bad. I love to hear from people who visit this site, even the criticism! It is always interesting and useful to  know what other people’s opinions are! I’m afraid the guest book is now defunct, since geocities was removed by yahoo.

I would really like to see your creations!

If by any chance, you happen to be an amateur or even professional cartographer as well, then let me know and I can link to you. I can even display one of your maps on the Other Lands page and on the blog, if you would like to show off your talent and don’t have your own website, or would just like to promote your work.

If you have drawn a map, or share my hobby, please let me have a look! I love to see other peoples work and I’m quite happy to post your maps.

Blog

I now have a blog as well, so I will post anything new there first, including any maps you send me. It’s a lot quicker than editing the website and also easier for you the visitor to see what’s new.
